Winter climbing on Aonach Mor Scotland. With a high avalanche risk we opted for a ridge climb on a snow covered crest called Golden Oldy.

Lovely walk in
Golden Oldy (II, 500m) being on the west face and being a ridge was safe from avalanche. Its a a fun exposed ridge without much technical difficulty that culminated, at least in our case, in cramponing up a slope on perfect nevé. Routes on the east face were all in high avalanche danger zones due to the massive amount of snow. The prevailing winds create massive cornices on the east face that jut out by a couple of meters from the cliff edge. Wind-slab is another danger – a result of large amounts of poorly bonded snow pack and strong prevailing winds. |
