Crimson Chrysalis (5.8, 320m), Red Rocks, Nevada

Having a climbing road trip around the American West wouldn’t be incomplete without a trip to Red Rock Canyon.

What most people hit Vegas for

Red Rocks is a beautiful sandstone Massif in the Nevada dessert.
It is conveniently (or inconveniently) close to Las Vegas to the point at which the suburbs almost stretch to the crag and the city can be seen from the top of some of the peaks.  This was a flying visit and we spent one night in Vegas (at the Paris - tacky but unbelievable value).

The obvious spot to camp out is 13 Mile campground . The winds here can really pick up and my little tent got blown away on more than one occasion only to be saved by a cactus bush 20 meters away.

My little tent a 13mile camp ground

Driving from the campsite into the 13-Mile scenic loop the beautiful red rock looms up on the right hand side and it is here among  the scattering of crags, buttresses and canyons that much of the sport climbing is.  We spent a day here....

Red Rocks by name....

Sandstone crimping

With such amazing looking mountains it wasn’t long before we ditched the sport climbing and headed for Crimson Chrysalis (5.8, 320m) and Frogland (5.8, 260m) up among the walls of the sandstone mountains. Here Andrew's 4x4 came in handy on the approach. From memory they were both great days out, however the wind was so strong (and very cold) we were forced to bail off Crimson Chrysalis a couple of pitches from the summit as we had started shivering (never a good sign). I managed to drop my camera on pitch one (destroyed). Sadly I can't provide any photos of these great routes.
