Mot Sola (n6-,360m), Haegefjell, Norway

Why head all the way to California to climb in Tuolumne Meadows when Norway is on our doorstep. Okay the weather is much wetter than California but if you get lucky then a very similar experience can be had only a few hours from London.

Cathy, Robin, Rich and myself headed to Haegefjell in the Telemark area of Norway only about 3 hours or so from Oslo.  Haefefjell is a pristine Granite dome situated in a densely forested area.
It wasn’t the most promising start. Grey skies that threatened rain, soaking wet rock, no other climbers in the area to speak of, and locals who were a bit baffled as to what we were doing there. We wild camped at the base of the cliff (which we still couldn’t see because of the cloud), and spent a day or two dabbling on the lower pitches of routes before the wet slabs prevented any further progress.

Miserable weather

With a dilemma of what to do we checked the forecast and it revealed wall to wall sunshine for the next four days. From then on it was a different place. The rock dried, the light went from a dull Scandinavian grey, to lovely bright and warm. We got on the rock and climbed...

The following routes were done (Norwegian grades)…..
  • Via Lara (n3+) – 325m
  • Agent Orange (n5+) – 300m
  • Gone with the Weed (n5+)- 325m
  • Reven (n6-)- 325m
  • Mot Sola(n6-) – 355m

Mot Sola, n6-, 360m is a classic of the cliff. It follows the obvious corner on steeper ground than the other routes we climbed. Good to climb a  non slab route here. There was a few bolts on route but cams protected well....

Reven and Gone with the Weed were also great outings. Both had their share of runout slab climbing, interesting enough to be engaging without being too hairy.....
